What a fantastic Mind Games! I could write all about it, but the professionals already did: St. Louis Beacon Wall Street Journal We had a wonderful time at the January Monthly Gathering. SLAM Welcomed mystery authors Sharon and Bill Hopkins, who spoke about everything from how to start writing a book, to how to publish, to fast cars. About 40 Mensans attended this wonderful program, and I think that every single one of them (us!) had a book in our heads just needing to be put on paper. If you missed the program and are interested in more information, visit the Deadly Writes Facebook page. Next month we welcome John Kosash, MPA, Policy Fellow at the Missouri Foundation for Health (MFH), speaking on and answering questions about the Affordable Care Act (ACA). See the Calendar for details. Check out the information on the front page regarding our scholarship auction on September 15th. When I first joined Mensa, this was my first event. It's a lot of fun - you can get some great bargains and have a lot of laughs in the process. Some of my more memorable purchases include a helicopter ride, cooking lessons, a box of brooches, gift certificates at pennies on the dollar, a bag of owls, and an original oil painting. The auction is a blast, but it's not all fun and games. The Jack Garrett Memorial Scholarship was founded in 1995 in memory of an active and well-loved local member who took his own life. When a similar incident happened with another member years later, the scholarship was renamed the St. Louis Area Mensa Memorial Scholarship, and eventually The Healthy Minds Scholarship. It is our hope that the recipients of these scholarships - students in the mental health field - will help other people overcome issues that would cause similar situations. So, come out, have fun - and donate to a good cause! St. Louis Area Mensans came together at the July Monthly Gathering for an "Idea Bouce," an event pioneered at Washington University. Long-time and new members alike brainstormed for ideas about the upcoming SLAM year, and discussed methods and implementation. Some of the top ideas included a Comedy Night, "Show and Tell," getting speakers from Wash U on a variety of topics, field trips, learning a foreign language, cooking classes, going to a firing range, hiking, debates, and more. Watch your MSLaneous for upcoming events based on this wonderful Idea Bounce! Thanks to everyone who participated. The 2012 Mind Games is now a memory, and St. Louis Area Mensa is in the spotlight. We are hosting the 2013 Mensa Mind Games April 19-21, 2013. For more information, and to register, go to the national Mensa Mind Games web page. |
